both radiator fans stopped working/ fan relay

I have a '04 Nissan Maxima..Still trying to isolate the following problem:

The car started overheating at idle and the A/C started blowing warm air at idle also. I found that BOTH radiator/ac fans are not working. My local Nissan dealership suggested that the fan assembly could be bad but I find it hard to believe that BOTH fan motors went bad at the same time. I started thinking the problem could be a fuse or relay.

I looked up a diagram and I found that there are 3 cooling fan relays. Why are there 3 relays to only 2 fans? Whats the 3rd relay for? Do you think this is the likely problem? I'd figured i'd start with the relay since it is the easiest.

thanks for your help!

There are 3 fusibles that need to be checked as well as three relays here are guides to help with both with the relay locations and the cooling fan wiring diagrams so you can see how the system works below.

I wouldnt even know where to begin on testing the motors. I have no voltmeter or anything, never really had to use one before & I doubt I would know how to use one even if I had one handy.

For electrical testings you would at least need a test light or DVOM. To test the fans, disconnect the fan connectors and ground one terminal while applying battery voltage to the other but this fan should have 4 terminals so you might make a mess out of it.

Get a DVOM or testlight first because to test the fuses or relays and their terminals you need to know if battery voltage is present.

Heres a guide on how to use a test light and a DVOM

I have a '04 Nissan Maxima, both radiator fans stopped working at the same time. I started thinking its possibly a fuse or relay since both fans stopped working. I contacted the parts dept. of my local Nissan dealership and they didnt list any fan fuse or relay for it (which i find a bit odd).

I find it hard to believe that both fan motors went bad at the same time..Any suggestions of what else it could be if there isn't any kind of fuse or relay for the fans?

Thanks!

I dont know what they are talking about because there are 3 relays that run the system here is a guide to help you test the relays.

Here is the wiring diagrams for the fan and the relay locations.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

Cheers

My car is overheating. I noticed that I have two fans, but only 1 is working. Could this be a fuse or a bad fan? How do I test this issue?

hi, could be either issue, either a bad radiator fan relay, or a bad fan altogether, if you hard wire the faulty fan to the battery, and it comes on strong, you know the fan is good and the relay will need replacement,
thanx

How do I hard wire the fan?

you have to unplug the fan and put jumper wires from the fan directly to the battery, pos to pos ,neg to neg.

My 1998 Nissan Maxima SE overheats when the car is idleling and the A/C is on. I replaced the radiator in March so it's new. I noticed that the fan on the passenger side does not turn on. Could this be the problem and if it is do I have to replace the whole kit that comes with the mounting bracket and two fans or can I replace the single fan?

This is a very complicated circuit with dual, 2 speed fans with a control module in charge of everything.

They are designed to run simultaneously though so if one runs and the other doesn't, yo probably have a bad fan.

Thanks Wrenchtech for your reply. This is the same thing that I thought about the fan and that I would have to replace it soon. But do you think that this is what is causing the engine to overheat when the car is in idle with the A/C on? Thanks again for your help

You can't know until you have the fans working correctly. The fans have a 2 speed system so you will have to see if both speeds are working.

The problem Im having is that the radiator fan won't kick on,but when I unplug the temp sensor it kicks on. I've gone ahead and changed the sensor to a new one but it still wont come on unless the sensor is unplugged.

The fan would only come on when the required temperature turns the fan switch on. Is the engine overheating and is coolant level correct?

Yes and yes, I also read elsewhere that the fan won't kick on if the car is idle? It would have to be actually running?

The information you read about vehicle has to be running for the fans to work is wrong. In fact it is the reverse, up to a certain point. When vehicle is not moving, the coolant in radiator would heat up as well and this would require the fan to work to reduce the heat of the coolant.
When vehicle is moving, air flow is able to help cool the radiator resulting in less use of the cooling fans.
Do the fans come on when A/C is turned on?
When does the overheating occur?
Do you have coolant losses issues?
Is lower radiator hose very much cooler than the upper hose?

Radiator fans are controlled by the engine computer via signals from the Engine Coolant Sensor and if the fans are not coming on, it could be a faulty computer.

Oh alright. Figured that didn't sound right.
As for the fans going on when the A/C is turned on that would be a negative.
It hasn't overheated on me (yet)
After I did the radiator flush I drove the vehicle for about two hours my first stop was around 40 min mark of driving and the car did not overheat or anything then another 40 mins or so temp was not out of normal.
There is no coolant loss. as for the hoses they are both warm.
I went ahead and checked the thermostat and it seemed to be clogged as soon as I removed coolant and water was purged from the gasket.

Radiator fan doesn't turn on and thus my car overheats. Could this be the radiator cooling fan motor that doesn't work? Or do I have to replace the entire radiator fan?

Hello,

Does your vehicle have 1 or 2 fans? Also do you have A/C? If so turn the A/C on, do the fans come on? If so most likely it is your Coolant Temp Sensor. It is locate on the front of the engine in thermostat housing.

When the coolant temperature is low, the thermostat would be closed and minimal amounyt of coolant can flow through.

From your description, I don't see any problem with the cooling system. During cold starts, it would take anywhere between 20 to 45 minutes for the fan to come on depending on weather conditions. Start engine and let it idle. As long as temperature does not go up, keep engine running until the fan comes on.

When the A/C compressor is running, the fans must be working otherwise you risk the A/C sytem building up excessive pressure and can rupture hoses if they are not in good condition.

Sorry, for delay in responding. Ok, do you know the location of the Radiator Fan Relays? They are located in the Relay Box on drivers side in engine compartment... You will need to check them... Here is a diagram...

Check out the link below for relay testing.... https://www.2carpros.com/how_to/how_do_i_check_a_relay.htm If relays test good then try straight wiring from battery to fan plug. .

my radiator fan wont go off when the car is idling....when u first crank it up...it warms up normal, the fan will come on and off like norm for a few mins...but if leave it idling for about 20mins i notice the fan dont go off at all...i know this is not normal because it use to go on and off beofore i replace the engine. also i notice it idle about 1000rpm, is that the norm for a 95 maxima?. Another issue im having is i think i have a gas leak...when i first replace the engine, i drove it for about 10miles and the engine light came on...had it check and it was cyl 2 was misfiring....took it back to the mechanic and he replace the injectors with the ones on the old engine...the light hasn't come back on...but now i smell gas when it idle, and at time it idle irregular. i kno its a bad gas leak cause the mileage im getting now is really bad. plus the strong rich smell. we look for physical signs of leaks but could not see any. what could be cause this leak and how can i find it??

Hi jahbar,

Idling should be below 800 rpm, 1,000 is too high.

Check you EVAP system for disconnected hoses rgarding the fuel smell.

If the radiator fans does not stop, either there is not enough coolant in the system, faulty fan switch or a partially stuck thermostat.

If AC is on, fans would not stop unless compressor cuts.

Where is the radiator fan motor located and how difficult is it to replace. I'm sorry that I am not able to donate any money because I don't use credit cards. I thank you in advance for your time.

the radiator fan motor is attached to the end of the fan, if you find the radiator fan, it will be bolted to the radiator fan shroud on the inside of the engine comprarment, just unbolt it and disconnect the wire connectors and pull the motor out, job=done.
