I have checked the radiator, pumps and the fans and the problem still persist. Its an awkward problem because the temperature gauge goes up suddenly and then few seconds pass and it goes down again. Does anyone know what could the problem be?

Have you checked or changes the thermostat? It sounds like that the thermostat may be sticking just a bit then opens.

What type of stat did you use? If you bought the premium one they tend to that. It will get a touch warmer then normal then open and the temp drops kinda strange.

Im really not sure what stat it is because my mechanic was the one who changed it and the only thing I know is that he bought it in Auto Zone. But if you mention that it tends to get the car warmer it could be that then. Because the temp rises especially when Im coming up a mountain.

Ok so if I am understanding correctly it warms up when you put the engine under a load? Does it do fine then when you are flat ground or down hill then?

Thats correct! On flats and downhills its usually normal but in hills it starts to warm up.

Ok so different thought then. Have had the cat converter checked for proper flow? Also the radiator is flowing good and the water pump is moving the coolant sufficiantly?

But what does the cat converter has to do with the temp problems?

A partially cloggged converter would restrict exhaust gas flow and this can affect the engine operating temperature.

Symptoms indicates an inefficient cooling system and the most common cause is a partially restricted radiator. You mentioned checking the radiator, what did you do? Did you have it serviced?

There are two possibilites.

Engine is overheating or the gauge is not reading accurately. When overheating occurs, does the temperature drop once the speed of vehicle or rpm drops for a while?

It only goes up when Im going up a hill then it normalizes. I can only use the car normally at night because it doesnt warm at all.

Do you have coolant losses issues?
When overheating occurs, does the coolant gets pressurised and overflows into the recovery tank?
Do the fans stay running when the gauge is reading high?

The coolant is working normally. And when the car overheats nothing appears to be wrong. I have taken it to 2 mechanics and even to the Mitsubishi dealers and none find a problem with the car.

It could be that the engine is not really overheating. What you have is a false reading and it can be from the meter cluster, ECT or even a poor ground circuit connection. I would suggest using a scan type thermometer to monotor the cooling temperature to confirm.

Thats what I was thinking too. Changing the temp sender.

Still I would check exhaust flow too as a partialy plugged exhaust can cause your systems.

Hello,

Please remove all of the spark plugs and turn the engine cover. if any coolant comes out the head gasket is blown and needs to be replaced.

Please let us know what you find.

Cheers, Ken

My car is showing overheating at forty one degrees ambient temperature, especially, when i needed to turn on A/C in such hot climate the, car overheat sensor blinks for warning alarm at last heat level. And even on normal 100 km/hr drive speed it gives same status for every 20 km (approximate). i have noticed coolant reversal in the overflow vessel on first diagnose. And then on second diagnose the vessel was empty. What could be the reason please? Can anyone help please?

Thanks

Hello,

It sounds like you may have a blown head gasket lets confirm by doing a test by following the guide below.

My 2002 mitsubishi lancer overheated and the radiator had to be replaced and we put a new thermostat in. It starts and runs fine sometimes, but sometimes it is very difficult to start and keep running. This has been over a 2 day period. There is no water in the oil. And no oil leaking around the gaskets.

When I tried to start it this a.m. I could hear sounds like water circulating and a light clicking sound which I don't remember hearing before.

Any advise you can give will be appreciated. Thanks, Wanda

The cooling system wouldn't have anything to do with the engine starting. However, when you had the service done, did you/they forget to reattach or plug something in? Go over everthing and double check.

Is there a check engine light on? If so, have the computer scanned. If not, check fuel pump pressure, fuel filter for blockage, fuel regulator for leaks, injectors for firing/spray pattern/flow.

The other day I was driving to work when my engine started to get hot. When I came to a stop there was steam coming from under the hood.I made it home and the next day checked it. There was coolant all over the engine compartment and very little in the radiator.I have changed the radiator cap and the thermostat but when I took it out on the highway it still gradually gets up to the red zone and steam comes from under the hood.Does this mean that there is a blockage in the radiator or that the water pump is not circulating properly?

Coolant all over the engine means you have a leak. A ruptured rubber hose is probably the most likely suspect. The first thing is to determine where the coolant is leaking out. Fill the radiator while the engine is cold, then start the engine and watch where the coolant shows up when the engine starts to warm up.

You may have a number of crushed core tubes did they take of the tanks and do a core clean, and make sure the cooling fans are still working, start here.
