on a 2004 mercedes ml 350 do I have to drop fuel tank to replace the fuel filter on a scale 1 to 10 how difficult

No, it doesn't have to come out. The filter is on the left rear of the vehicle. You need to remove the left rear tire and the plastic inner liner to access it. I would give it a 5.
