Has this belt broken? If so you have valve damage. If you are replacing the belt as per scheduled maintenance see picture.

When you have an engine problem please list which engine it is. If you have the V-6, that is an interference engine so some of the valves will be bent. That will require a valve job. An engine machine shop that does the repairs should be able to give you a copy of the diagram to set the sprockets correctly before reinstalling the heads. To be safe, set everything correctly, back all the sprockets up a few teeth so no piston is at top dead center, install the heads, then slowly bring each sprocket to its mark by hand and install the belt.

This is an interference engine and the procedures are rather complex for installation. Hope what I have here is sufficient for you. If you need the complete procedures, please respond to this post.

2.6l V6 K-series. I think my problem was "safe" inscription on crank pulley (no notch). I aligned it to "safe" arrow on front cover and noticed that after removing crank pulley that notch on splined crank gear was not aligned with 12:00 arrow on block. Notches on left hand cam gears were pointing to each other "somewhat" (manual said this might be the case) and I turned crank again to be sure that I was not 180-deg off. Proceeded with three belt change using special tools and followed the manual very closely. After re-installing all components, cannot turn crank bolt more than 10-degrees with wrench before it jams (in either direction). Do not think valves are trashed and have no confidence in timing now. The only thing I can think of is to try to find TDC on number one cylinder and then figure out cams. Please lend experience.

Thank you,
S. Duffy

Hi there, I have had a look at the timing system and it is some what complex, I will study the text which is quite extensive and see if I can post your best options for this problem. Firstly take the plugs out and gently, Very gently check that you are not just hitting compression, if there is any resistance you will be touching a valve, I will in the mean tine study the text.

Each cam shaft has a timing mark on the block behind the sprocket as well as crankshaft pulley. The belt should also have marks on it, sometimes even which way it faces.

There is another issue. You most likely bent valves from the failed timing belt. My guess is you need major engine work.
