Reciently, my engine started making a noise. It has a lot of miles, so I wasn't concerned too much about a very slight rod bearing noise. Reciently, however, it is making a loud snaping noise. The sound seems to come from the top center or top rear of the engine. It does not sound anything like a bearing or a lifter. It is a snaping noise that seems like something metal popping. Could it be the drive unit on the oil pump? It is the 3.7L. Does it have a timing belt or chain? Again, this isn't a tap or a knock. It is a snap. Any ideas?

The 3.7L uses a timing chain with a tensioner. A loose chain banging against the cover is a good suspect.

Is it possible that the noise could deal with the oil pump.the noise seems to come from the top

Nope. On older engines the oil pump was in the bottom way to the back of the engine. Yours is driven by the front end of the crankshaft. No chains, gears, or shafts. It just has one gear on the crankshaft snout running inside another gear around it.
