2004 Hyundai Elantra Exhaust fumes inside car

When engine is running, exhaust gas creeps in when AC is in Fresh air mode. On re-circulation mode smell vanishes.Took to a mechanic to diagnose. Said catalytic converter is to be replaced. I think it must be some weak gasket at the exhaust manifold or some area that need to be changed as there is hardly any odour at the tail gate. A response is appreciated.

I think your on the right track, probably just a small exhaust leak in your engine compartment. your only problem is your going to have a hard time getting them to just replace a gasket, the shop will want to replace something a little more expensive. on the other had you may have a small pin hole in your cat or another pipe causing the leak and there's no way to get around that but to have it replaced.

Thank you for the quick response. My suspicion was right.. The gasket cost must be peanuts and hence guys want me to replace a working cat and other related stuff to bring a bill to around $250.That would be considered substantial here in India. Anything less and the answer is - it is an old car and difficult or expensive for new parts and better you have to live with it!! How can you live breathing CO2 or some other poison!!!! But will try to find someone.Thanks again.
