please explain

I've been frustrated with this problem for over 2 years. When fueling my 2004 Pilot the gas pump prematurely shuts off the pump. Only a few seconds elapse and less than a pint (my estimate) of gas is dispensed. It often takes over 30 minutes to get an empty tank filled. This problem is discussed here and other places on the internet with no solutions. Honda wants to "try" replacing the fuel tank but in at least one case this did not solve the problem.
