Battery disconnected, make sure you have the radio security code, remove serpentine belt, there are 2 bolts holding the alternator in place no adjustment bolt, remove and disconnect main wire and secondary loom plug.

Here is a guide to help you get an idea on what you are in for.

Electrical problem
1997 Holden Commodore 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Hi there, can someone please give me a bit of a walkthrough for changing the alternator on a 1997 VT commodore.

I've done many before but not on this model car, it appears to have a spring loaded type assembly for the serpentine belt tensioner and i don't want stuff this up.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Hi there,

Place a socket and bar on the tensioner pulley center bolt, pull back on the tensioner and flick the belt off, make a drawing first of the way it goes, otherwise you will be back here wanting that info as well, rake off the battery terminal and remove the 2 supporting bolts and wires for the alt, make sure that the main cable to the alternator is not burnt or badly corrodes as this is a problem with them.
