What is wrong if my Yukon goes back in neutral when trying to shift in 3rd gear and in drive?

first, check the fluid level. make sure the fluid is not burned or varnished.

the usual reason is the clutches being worn out in the trans. it will require removal of the trans and inspected for a failure.
