Hello,

There is an auto headlamp relay that needs to be checked here is a guide to help you test it with the relay location as well as the headlight wiring diagrams so you can see how the system works.

https://www.2carpros.com/articles/how-to-check-an-electrical-relay-and-wiring-control-circuit

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know what happens.

My girlfriend recently got into an accident in her 2001 Ford Taurus. The passenger side headlight got smashed and does not work, however the driver side headlight stopped working also. There is no damage on that side of the car, and both sides daytime lights and highbeams continue to function.

Just looking for some insight as to why the other side would stop working.

Checked all the fuses and none appear to be blown, but that's about the extent of my knowledge of car repairs.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Damaged light bulb on one side may cause a fuse damage
disconnect the damaged bulb and check wiring not touching metal
recheck fuses in central junction box under left side of dash
and if all checks OK check bulb it self as it may be bad too
