i'm looking at a 04 ford focus the person said the car threw a rod! what does that mean and about how much would it be to fix?

Start looking for a different car. So much repair work is involved you might as well rebuild the entire engine.

Offer 'em $100, if the rest of the car is in great shape!

Then do the repairs...You can get a rebuilt engine from auto parts store, You can find a reasonable shop to install it.
