engine makes a rather loud noise

wife is experiencing a problem with her oil system in that it (engine) makes a rather loud noise then the engine light comes on and engine temp goes up. This has happened prior. I've verified the oil level, has had a recent oil change. No oil pressure gauge to monitor hile driving. Called from road side both times
