My brake pedal is barely going down when I press on it. This just happened and I am unsure it it the brake line or the abs, abs motor etc. I am afraid to drive it for fear of it not stopping quickly enough.

Do you mean the brake pedal is very hard to push, but the brakes still work?

Yes I can press on the brake pedal it goes down about an inch and the car comes to a stop. No sound, no hissing etc from the brake pedal, it almost feels like you are pressing down on a brick. Again you can press and the car does stop, but the pedal is barely going down even with pressure from my foot. Thanks

Okay... You lost the power assist to the brake system. Now, there are different models of systems that you could have. One could be a simple vacuum assist from the engine vacuum, and the other could be a vacuum pump that is electric. The problem lies with one or the other. You need to have it checked to see which system you have and let me know what you find. Please understand, if it is a vacuum pump, it will require testing with specific equipment to check the parts. Also, let me know if the check engine light or the ABS light is on.

The check engine light is on, the abs is not. I will take it and have a diagnostic run on the check engine light. As for a test on the vacuum pump I am assuming that I will have to take it to a mechanic.

Thanks again for the info, I was wondering if it was the abs or vacuum.

Since the check engine light is on, take the vehicle to a nationally recognized parts store and see if they can scan the computer for you. If you are not in CA, most places will do it for free and there will most likely be a brake system related trouble code stored in the computer.

Ok this just happened to me. I have an 03 w/ 140k I went to start van after work and started to start made a noise and did not start. I restarted all seemed fine. I was driving down the road and pressed brake pedal and I had to use a lot of force to stop. When I got to my destination put in park I noticed the rpm were higher 2 vs 1.2.
What happened? I just bought this van a few weeks ago from an individual.
