auto or manual?

If its a manual transmission and 1st and reverse are easy to select with the engine switched off and difficult to select with the engine running it usually means the clutch is dragging. If thats the case best thing is a new clutch kit ( pressure plate, clutch disc and release bearing)

Thnx alot for your reply. Its manual transmission. The car is also loosing power up the hill, in addition to the gear selecting problem, could it be to do with the clutch again. Thanks

sounds like your clutch is slipping.when you say loosing power , do you mean the engine wont rev up? if the clutch is slipping the engine will rev but the car won't accelerate as quick as it should. you will also get a smell from a burning clutch.

I would tend to think that it is a clutch problem, have this checked out first.

The car dont gather speed up the hill despite pressing the clutch all the way down to the floor. Dont go over 20-30mph.

Yes engine revs up but car will not accelerate up the hill despite pressing the clutch right to the floor.

sounds like your clutch is worn out , best to replace clutch disc , pressure plate and release bearing when doing this job

also make sure to check the twin mass flywheel for excessive movement or any grease escaping from it. A lot of guys just replace them when replacing a clutch these days.
