Power Steering Fluid?

Hi,
My mechanic told that its time for my car to change the power steering fluid. But i read in some reviews this fluid should not be changed ..
1) Please suggest me the purpose of this fluid and
2) how to check whether this needs to be replaced?
3) How much it usually costs?

No need to flush the PS fluid, unless system was serviced for some reason (new pump or hose).

My steering screeches when I turn my steering wheel after first starting up the car. I thought it was just in need of power steering fluid, however, the problem still persisted after I added fluid.

My friend tried listening with the hood open while I turned the steering wheel in an effort to locate the origin of the screeching, but we couldn't find where it was coming from.

Check contidion of belt, make sure it is not contaminated with oil/coolant.
Check PS pressure and return hoses for leaks.

It is highly likely that if you have original belt, it needs to be replaced.

Recently I have noticed that whenever I inspect the level in power steering fluid reservoir It is almost at the bottom inspite of regular filling to the required level. Power steering function is alright. What could be the reason? and how to tackle it.

you should check under the car and inspect the steering rack for leaks, this is the most common cause of power steering leaks, if the rack is faulty, this will be a Job for your mechanic.
