What causes jerk on gear shift?

Either the torque converter clutch solenoid is bad or the 1st gear shift solenoid is bad.

Thanks DrCranknWrench for the speedy answer. Error code indicates refer to TCC lock up stuck off. Does TCC involve at 1st to 2nd gear shift. I thought it is for the OD engagement. I am not a tachie. Just trying to understand it as I am in Sri Lanka and Jimny is not a model imported by the suzuki agents and spares are hard to find. I will have to import it.

Hi,, Further to my last update, the real problem I am having is which part to order as the repair shop guys are not exactly sure if it is a solanoid ( though the check engine light comes up and error code refers to TCC solanoid). So I am in the dark untill I find a Jimny with no problem and the repair shop guys can use parts from that to check my car.

That is the Torque Converter Clutch Solenoid code that is coming up. It could still be the torque converter though as a bad solenoid will make it act up. Either way, the transmission needs to come apart.
I should have suggested, if I did not, taking it to a Transmission Shop as automatic transmissions require a lot of special knowledge and specialized tools to work on them. Regular repair shops generally send them out to tranny shops to get them fixed and charge you for the repair and the remove and replace and if there is an issue you have to go through them. Don not go to AAMCO as they are over priced. You can use the search engine on this site to find a transmission shop near you.

Thanks DrCranknWrench. I took it to the Suzuki agents this time( they do not do this model though) and they connected the scanner & reset. The check engine light disappeared . No error codes. Jerk didn't come during the short run about 3 km test drive. Asked me to run it & bring back if the jerk come again. I used the car to travel to my office yesterday which is about 45km and gears shifted without any problem for about 30km and jerk started again. Not too bad though & I realized if you push the accelerator a it too hard from a traffic jam when the vehicle starts to move after slowing down this was happening. On the way back again same thing but by the time I reached home it was very rough gear change and there was smoke coming from the gear box side & when scanned P0710 came.This is very confusing and It looks like I need a new transmission box. Sorry for the long message.

Unfortunately I do not have the code chart for your model as it is not sold in the USA.
However it sounds like the torque converter may be bad. The fact that the solenoids come up and don't show up in the trouble codes may just be that the torque converter is not allowing the proper fluid pressure to be created and the solenoids see that as something to throw a code but would still function as they should. The smoke is probably from the torque converter clutch pack which mostly has to do with starting from a stop. It kind of functions for all gears as it is the equivelent of the clutch on a manual transmission. So, it will effect downshifts and other upshifts as well.
At this point it does sound like you need to have the transmission rebuilt. Try to find someone who is very confident and has experience with automatic transmissions. As I said they are difficult to work on and require special tools.

None of the people I talked to in Sri Lanka including the technicians at the agent explained me the role of the torque converter & how it affects if it is not functioning properly for all gears like you did. I have the service manual for this model including all the error codes. P0170 refers to Temperature sensor malfunction( Transmission fluid temperature sensor circuit). I think the best option now is to replace the transmission box as I have my doubts about these people who tried to repair it in Sri Lanka. Agents do not repair it. They ask to replace.

When you look for a transmission make sure you have a part in choosing it. You can try to get a Japanese Domestic Market , "JDM" transmsion which will have about 30,000 miles on it. This is because Japan has a law to replace engines at 30,000 miles and there are people who replace the transmission or very often just get a new car. So, there are basically new transmissions to be had, but not as many as engines. Just search the web for JDM transmission dealers or engine dealers. They are about the same cost as any used transmission and shipping is included and you should be able to get a transmission for under $1000 shipped.
