2003 Renault Megane gearbox yellow warning light

Hi,
The gearbox yellow warning light appears intermittently on the dashboard. The automatic gearbox seems to work fine although not as smooth as I would like it. Any idea what might be the reason? Any advise?

The light indicates that the transmission control module has recognized a malfunction and stored a trouble code describing it. You need to have the trans module scanned for codes to have a starting point.
