I was driving and my car made a screeching noise and wouldn't let me shift into gear.I still can't shift the car into gear. When I start my car up and hold the clutch in the engine does not make any noise but when I let go of the clutch it makes a screeching noise.

Can you shift into gear with the engine off? If so, confirm that the slave and clutch master cylinder are good. If they are, it sounds like either the throw out bearing is bad or the pressure plate has come apart. In all actuality, it could even be a worn clutch disc.

I have another question. Was it a screeching or a grinding?

If you can't shift into gear with the engine off, then I don't believe it is clutch related. It sounds more like an internal transmission problem. I assume the transmission is presently in neutral.

Just for curiosity, have you checked to make sure the clutch master cylinder is full?

Check that first. It's under the hood on the firewall of the engine compartment. It may be low ir empty which would cause the clutch not to disengage.
