Replaced heater core, water pump but not the thermostat yet, coolant level is good, after replacing water pump, temp gauge was erratic but leveled off after adding more coolant. After adding coolant started getting heat through defroster... only lasted about a minute as temp gauge went down the heat went away. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Why did you replace those parts? Was the heater core leaking or was it a misguided attempt at solving the no-heat issue? Assuming there's no air pocket that hasn't been bled out, feel the upper radiator hose after the engine has been running ten or fifteen minutes. It should be too hot to hold onto for very long. If it's cool, pinch that hose to block coolant flow to see if the temperature comes up. If it does, suspect the thermostat.

Yes, heater core was leaking and water pump was also bad. It seems to have good water flow, as the upper radiator house gets hot. I will be changing thermostat if this problem persists, other than that I don't know what to try.
