serpentine belt replacement and diagrams please?

What does the "Measuring Point" mean in the diagrams? I know there is suppose to be a certain amount of tension for the belts. Isn't there a cheap tool that can be purchased to check if tension is within specification ?

You measure belt deflection. Meaning how much can you press the belt in. All you need is a measuring tape.

Here are the specs from a 1995 Protege as that was the last vehicle listed on this thread.

So when you press the belt in and it can move more then these specs then you tighten the bolt to tighten the belt so it has less deflection.

So if I got this right. For each of the two drive belts, we loosen bolts A and B on both the alternator belt and the power steering belt and then loosen bolt C on both the belts to remove them. Once that is done the 2 new belts can be installed. Then tighten bolts A and B, then tighten bolt C to apply tension. Measure the tension from the spec provided by KaseKenny and we're done ?

I've had this car for about 4 years. Bought it with approximately 90,000 miles on it. From the time I bought it the belt would slip and squeak. I tried tightening it a few times, but it still continued. About 3 months ago I replaced the alternator and water pump. The squeaking stopped, but then the belt started to break. Sometimes it breaks after a day. This last time we tightened it up as much as possible and it lasted about three weeks.
I've read that this is a common problem with this car, but haven't found any definitive solutions. One guy said to change to a deeper belt from .80 to .100. Another said when he took off the power steering/A/C belt the problem stopped (don't really want to do that) Otherwise, I'm stumped. The last mechanic to work on it said the pulley's appeared aligned and the bearings seemed okay. Any other ideas?

You most likely have one of two issues. First the belt is not aligned properly and it is causing it to run up on the side of a pulley and it breaks. The way to find this issue is remove the belt and run a string or a laser level over the pulleys to make sure they are aligned properly.

The other is one of the pulleys are frozen and the belt is actually getting dragged over it and it is heating up and breaking. The way to find this is remove the belt and you should be able to rotate each pulley easily with your fingers.

Here is the info needed to remove the belt even though I doubt you need that at this point. Let me know if you have questions. Thanks

I am having the hardest time finding the tensoiner bolts to relieve the pressure from the two serpentine belts on my fiancee's 2001 mazda protege lx 1.6l...can you help me figure this out so that I can replace her belts?

belt keeps breaking to the water pump and alternator everything has been checked out and is good do you know why the belt keeps breaking

either belt is being over tightind or the pulleys are out of alingment also look for chips in any of the pulleys and uses a file too shave down any rough spots hope this helps lsauto

Alternator belt replaced and still squeals when cold. No bearing noise or other indication of binding. Tighten belt and squeal still comes back.

This happens when the pulley becomes glazed which happens when you get a small amount of oil or coolant on it. Remove the belt and use 200 grit sand paper and scuff up the pulley.

MY 1996 Mazda protege does the exact same thing. When it's cold it squeels really loud. it also does it when I turn my stereo and heater are on at the same time.

Mine does the same thing when it's cold and damp. Its all fixed once I used the sand paper :) I love this site.

I am trying to replace the alternator belt on my protege. to do this we have to take off the powersteering/ac compressor belt off first. however i cant find any diagrams in the car or online that show how to do this. i have searched several places that say that the belt is adjusted with the ac and many others say it is adjusted with the power steering pump. i have tried both ways and cant figure out how to get that belt off

As can be seen from the power steering pump image, there is an adjuster built into the mounting bracket.

Hey-I have a 1995 Mazda Protege, 1.5 L, 96,000 miles. Mechanic put a new alternator and belt on before I purchased it. Now about 2 weeks later the belt has broke. Any ideas what happen?

Hi there,

There could be a number of reasons, overtightened, faulty belt, misalignment, or just bad luck. If the new belt breaks again, check alignment and make sure that the belt is on over tight.
