Engine cranks great and when it starts it runs well. not the starter or battery.

What's the symptom when it doesn't start? Does it crank? Does it make a single loud clunk and not crank? Does it crank but you have no spark? How do you know it's not the battery or starter? Do the head lights or dome lights get dim or go out when you try to crank the engine?
