2003 Jeep Grand Cherokee instrument cluster

I am going to replace a defective cluster with a used one, is it a simple matter of removing the old and installing the used one or does it need to be programed by a technician

Yes it needs to be programed by Tech and scan tool. Reason for replacement ? has it been scanned? trouble code?

MPH and RPM gauges not working, it has not been scanned because I have not replaced it as yet. Do I have to go to an authorized Jeep dealer for this scanning

I meant was instrument cluster diagnosed by a trained Tech. There maybe other reasons Tach and speeedo out. It will save you $ and time if you have it diagnosed first. And if faulty replace not necessary to have Jeep program someone ASE certified can do that

Yes it was diagnosed as being faulty by a jeep dealer. Thanks for all the info you have been a great help.
