I live in Chicago with cold weather and snow/ice. 2 days ago I noticed a moaning sound coming from the front left side of the car and unable to determine if the right side is as well or not. I noticed the sound when I was at a red light with neither the brake or gas applied. I was in the 10 mph range and once I accelerated or braked the sound stopped. Today it repeated the same sound and only once did the noise occur at 20 mph. Its pretty inconsistent, but usually makes the sound. I drive a 2003 Ford Focus with 100,000 miles. I am about to take a cross county trip and am fearful to do so. I am not a mechanic, but would appreciate any advice! Thanks

I'm not exactly sure what you mean. First you said you were at a light when the sound occurred, then you said it first occurred while you were in the 10 mph range. I'll need to know if you hear this sound while the car is moving, not moving or both. Also, it's hard for me to know what you mean by a moaning sound. Does it sound like metal on metal, high pitched or low pitched? Also if you hear the sound while sitting still, does it increase when you step on the gas with the tranny in park. If you hear it while driving, does the sound increase the faster you go?
