Sometimes it subsides. no indicator lights come on and car seems to run fine You hear a metal sound, like something is loose and wiggling or rubbing against something. It seems like it is more when first started or a lower speeds, but maybe I just am not able to hear it when I accelerate to a higher speed. No indicator lights come on and I haven't had any problems that I recognize other than that.

No, I can't see anything. It seems to be more prominent when I hit the gas, but I couldn't hit the gas and see under the hood at the same time.

does it seem like rotational rattle or vibrational rattle?

I am not sure what the difference is, can you explain? If I had to guess I would say vibrational.

Could be caused by one of the following below

Oxygen sensor.
Catalytic converter.
Fuel injectors dirty/sticking.
Mass airflow sensor/Airflow meter.
Throttle position sensor.
Crankshaft position sensor
Knock sensor
Manifold absolute pressure sensor.
EGR Valve
Fuel pressure regulator leaking or defective fuel pump.
False air leakage.
Fuel contamination.
Foul/defective spark plugs.
Open spark plug wires.
Ignition coil/Coil packs defective.
Incorrect ignition timing.
Cap and rotor.

Note:If it doesn't apply disregard it

Thank you rasmataz for your response. I had all six ignition coils and spark plugs replaced and I'm still getting the same error message (Somthing about 3 of the six coils misfiring). The check engine/emission system light is still on. The car is still acting like it has compression/power/acceleration issues; the has no get up and go.

First of all after a foggy night my it runs really rough, like it is missing. Was told that could be a coil pack. (did not look into) Next time it was foggy I drove it to work and it acted the same way only this time it had hardly any power and started sorta whistling then all of a sudden it sounded like a hose had busted. I instantly pulled over and had noticed the bottom of the EGR valve had blown out. I replaced that and a few hoses it had melted, then when I start it up it sounds like a loud whining noise and has no power. I took of the belt and started it and it still has a terrible whining noise. so it is not any pulley. Any advice or ideas as to what is the problem?

The missing while foggy sounds like the moisture is causing cross firing through bad wires. The loud whistle could be a vacuum leak at the intake manifold.
If you could shoot a short video and post it somewhere and link to it, it might help narrow it down.

The knocking is a concern, i would be getting the engine oil pressure tested with a mechanical gauge first to prove engine oil pressure one way or the other, start here.

Engine Performance problem
2001 Ford Escape 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

Hello, and thank you in advance for your help. I am in a bit of an emergency, and not sure what to do.

Whenever it rains, the escape runs very bad. It sputters, stalls while idling, sometimes loses power, etc. THe check engine light will either flash or come on, usually fixing itself if you shut it off and turn it back on. When it is dry, it runs fine, even great!

Two days ago, it rained, and while I was driving, I lost all power. I could not get it to go over 25MPH, and it would not go over 2000RPM's no matter how much I floored it. It would sometimes whistle while I pushed the gas. While I was creeping my way back home, all of a sudden the brakes locked up, like what happens when it stalls, but it didn't stall.

I've read that it could be water leaking into the intake, and I took it apart, and didn't feel any moisture in there at all, and the filter is clean. I also read that it could be leaking onto the module, but not sure where or what that is. It started all day yesterday and last night, but wouldn't run. THis morning (it is cold out) it won't start at all.

I have no way of getting it to a garage to hook up to the computer.

Pleasee tell me it is something that I can fix!

ALso, not sure if it is related, but the seatbelt, ABS, break, and airbag lights come on whenver they want.

Sorry this is so long, but I wanted to make sure that I told everything. If you need any info, let me know, as I am very desperate, and can't afford to take it to a garage to be fixed, or even tow it there! THanks a bunch!!!!

PS: I took off the kick plates and rug, and it IS damp, so water is getting in (to the air intake?) so how do I fix that? I don't have an air compressor to blow it out... hair drier? Please help!

Hi JPercopo,

thank you for the donation.

Seems water is getting to some electrical control units interrupting their performance. Use a sponge to dry out excessive water and get some newspaper under the rugs, and carpet to help to dry out the carpets. A hair dry deos not help much becaue it would take a long tinme for you to dry out the damp carpet.

You need to locate the leakage source and rectify it.

So it does sound like moisture is getting in and causing it to loose power? That is what I thought, but the rugs weren't wet that I could find. I finally got the module on top of the intake off, and I'm going to keep it in the house overnight to let it dry out, it's been wet out for a while now, so hopefully I'll have some luck when I put it in tomorrow. I had someone look at it and they said it was the timing belt which I don't believe at all... he told me he would fix it for me for $800! He said it was just a coincidence that it only happened when it rained. I'll never talk to him again! It is so hard for a girl to get her car fixed with everyone trying to pull a fast one.
There wasn't enough power to run the computer scan on it. Thank you again for your help!! A girl really needs someone honest when it comes to cars! If I didn't know anything, I'd probably end up with a new engine!!! (gotta thank my dad for forcing me into the garage growing up!)

It definitely is not the timing belt.

You mentioned the carpet was wet so I thougth it could be water getting into the cabin to affect control modules but after additional research, I believe the crankshaft position sensor is the more likely cause. It could malfunction if water or dirt is getting between it and the reluctor. Check the wiring connections of the crankshaft position and Camshaft sensors. Note if there are any oxidations or contaminations at the connectors.

I have a 2002 Ford Escape with 95 000 km, recently noticed a lack of power a top end, noticed that on slight inclines it seems to drop out of overdrive into a lower gear and rev high which it never did previously, starts and runs fine otherwise, plugs, fuel and air filters and pcv have all been changed.[/i][/b]

My Ford Escape will not start. It has no power. There are no door locks, no clock, no lights, no instrument panel, no anything. . . . .
The battery is only a few months old so that is no my issue (hopefully). The key will turn but makes no noise and nothing flashes. It is stuck at my place of employment tonight.

It is like it has just shut down.

By the description given I would have to say the battery is dead. I read that the battery was just replaced, however if there is a draw on the vehicle such as a glove box light staying on or something similiar. That would drain a battery. Also the charging system needs to be checked to make sure the battery is maintaining proper voltage while vehicle is running.

The escape was drove to work and parked. I went out an hour later and it was dead. Could it have drained that quickly? What about a main fuse? Is that possible?

It could be a main fuse, but its not likely to blow a main fused while parked. (still possiable though) Have you tried to jump start yet? If when jumper cables are attached to battery see if power comes on. If yes then you have a draw somewhere. If not you have an open from battery to starter (main fuse or cable). Let me know which it is so that I may further help you to diagnosis.

YEAH!! It is running. Got a tester and it lit up when plugged to battery. Tried to jump it but it would just click. Finally was taking battery off to take it back where I bought it in May.

Tried to start it again while twisting negative side and it starting dinging inside of the car. Then it started when we turned the key. We had scraped out build up on the positive side yesterday but not the negative side. The negative side was built up but it was barely noticeable. Looking at it you would not think it had enough to make a difference.

Thanks for the help and advice.
