much easier to take the whole engine out.
but there is a shortcut,loosen all gearbox bolts,support engine from above,remove engine mounting,support gearbox underneath.separate engine away from gearbox.then remove the few hidden bolts between engine and gearbox.ensure all the dowels clear before removing the sump.
