Engine Cooling problem
2003 Cadillac CTS 69000 miles

I have a check engine light which came back saying my thermostat needs to be replaced. Ive been told it is a labor intensive job and may take anywhere from 1.5 to 5 hours to complete. The part itself is maybe $20 but the labor to replace the part is astounding. What has to happen in order to replace the thermostat? Is this something I could do at home or am I better off having it done in a shop?

you have to access the timming belt. and remove it, and you need special tools to set it back up, at 69k you should do a belt if you havent done one

The upper and lower intake need to be off, and the transfer pipe from the upper hose to the t-stat housing needs to come out. It uses external torx(e-torx) type fasteners. The bolt that holds the pipe, also holds the oil dipstick tube, and an engine lift strap.

a faulty thermostat can cause engine overheating so i would not recommend driving it until it is fixed...
