Hi,
Have a 2003 Rendezvous,with a 3.4 eng. automatic.
Car started overheating and we stopped several times to cool down and add water.
On the 3rd overheat, the red dash light came on then we lost power and motor shut down.
I never saw water leaking from the engine and no water in the oil.
Would a bad thermostat chut down the motor and not allow starting?

if it gets to hot it will shut down as a safety precaution. if it overheats quickly it cold be a bad tstat,if it takes a while it would be several things. when hot check rad for cold spots by putting hand on fins, make sure fans are inoperative. then have it pressure checked, you may have a head/intake gasket problem.

This guide can help us find out whats going on

Have the tests done below and try bleeding it again

Have it block and pressure tested-do the block first to pinpoint a combustion leaking into the cooling system or a gas analyzer to sniff for hydrocarbons at the radiator fill neck.

Pressure test: do not do a pressure test if there's leakage at the headgasket this might cause coolant into the cylinders and lock it up or bend a connecting rod if cranked thereafter. The headgasket should be repaired before doing the pressure test.

Bleeding it

Always bleed air from cooling system after replacing coolant. Set heater for maximum heat. Remove radiator cap. Loosen drain plug and remove drain bolt (if equipped) from engine block. Drain coolant reservoir. Fill coolant reservoir to MAX mark with 50/50 water-coolant mixture. Loosen bleed bolt and fill radiator up to base of filler neck. Close bleed bolt when coolant flows out without bubbles. Tighten bleed bolt. With radiator cap removed, start and operate engine to normal operating temperature. Add coolant if necessary and check for leaks.

Check fuse no.39/40 30amp

If the cooling fan don't come on time it will cause the engine to overheat-you need to check and test the fan motor, fan relay, coolant temperature sensor and the computer if its not turning on-

Hello my vehicle's temp gage would go up and beep like it was overheating then would go back down on its on and drive normal. I added coolant and it was fine for a while. Now when I try to drive it after going a short distance not even a mile it runs hot and starts to stall I tried to add more coolant but the reserve had what looked like a foamy or dirty mix of coolant and water. Have you ever heard of this and if so is it repairable? I know it has high miles but everything else was working fine on the car.

My car is leaking a pink/orange liquid on the passenger side near the water pump. On the lift, the mechanic says it is wet around the pump, but not on the pump. When the hood is lifted, it spritzes water from the top. The fan does not come on when it gets hot. Please help.

You will need to find a shop that can pin point the leak and diag the fan problem. The to problems may be related. Did thay do a pressure test on the cooling system?

it sounds like a water pump. if it is, the pump is about 89 and 1.2 hours for laboe

the other possibility is the lower intake. thats around 800-900.

you need a new shop with proper equipment to accurately diag the problem correctly.

Hello, I have a 2003 Buick Rendevous. Over the past month of winter I have noticed the heater was not blowing hot air. Then a couple of days ago it started to overheat. We had to refill the radiator and the overflow which were almost empty. There is water leaking under the car near the tire on the drivers side. As well as into the floorboard on the drivers side. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The easiest way to determine the source of the leak would be to fill cooling system and put a pressure tester on it. Pressure testing the cooling system pushes air into the system and can show you where the leak is at without having to run the vehicle. I would sugguest not driving the vehicle with a coolant leak, because overheating can lead to more costly repairs.

2 weeks ago I had my intake manifold gasket replaced because my car was overheating. Today my car overheated and eventually shut off and would not start back up. Water was overflowing from the coolant compartment. What could have caused this since I just had the intake manifold repaired? Has my engine blown out?

Any of dozens of different causes. You need to refill and pressure test the system to find any leaks. It may not have been completely filled when it was repaired as this system is prone to air pockets. You also could have head gasket damage from the original overheating.

So I am thinking Florida weather is messing with my car. I have changed coolant in my vehicle. I do notice that my fans have visibly come on once. When the coolant got too hot and I got a red light warning on my dash.
A helper at O'reillys auto care suggest both a temperature sensor and thermostat replacement.
I do not know why he suggested thermostat, sounds like a pain. But what I would like to do and did do was change relays and fuses.
I have not noticed anything awesome and wonder how I can manually make the radiators fan come on.
I have read that of the two fans, one should come on with the A/C turned on
that is not happening?

Good evening.

The A/C system should trigger the fan when the pressure in the A/C system reaches 150 lbs.

The cooling fan should come on when the temp reaches 215 degrees.

The simple way to check the system is this key on engine off, remove the wire connector from the coolant sensor on the intake. The fans should kick on. That will check the entire circuit and controls for the fans.

Start there.

Yes, I also believe the thermostat needs to be changed yes, it is a pain but must be done.

No, do not throw relays and fuses at it at this point. Lets find the root cause of failure.

With the engine cold, open and fill the radiator and fill it to the top and the over flow should be filled to the full mark. start the engine and turn on the heat. With the heater on, start the engine. Once operating temo is reached recheck the level in the radiator to make sure it is still full. You should be able to see the coolant circulating.

NOTE: Don't put the radiator cap on until the engine is hot and you are sure the level is ful.

Let me know if you need additional information.

Welcome, any symptoms besides the temp gage? I might have to use an infrared temp gage to double check the instrument gage? Are you losing coolant, do you have circulation through the radiator? Do you think air might be trapped because of repair work?

Engine Cooling problem
2002 Buick Rendezvous 140,00 miles

My car was running hot so I took it to a mechanic. He said it was a cracked head. he fixed it and some other stuff and I ended up paying $2,500.00. I have had it back for about a week and my radiator is still boiling but my gauge will go all the way to cold, and my service engine soon light will come on, then go off, then come on again.I had the thermostat changed 3 times in two weeks. What do you think it could be?

If I paid 3000 dollars to a mechanic I would tow it to his shop and say call me when you actually fix it! But that said, check your water pump, the impellers can over time disolve, I hope this mechanic at least changed the coolant, and checked the radiator for clogs....

Parked the car to look at a map for about a couple of minutes 2 days ago, the temperature hand went to the very end in the red area. Turned off the engine for a couple of minutes, & restarted. Now the temperature hand goes left and right of the center mark during driving, and goes to overheat area during traffic stop and parking. What could be the problem?

Is the coolant level ok ?? If so you may have a bad thermostat or cooling fans are not working. Also the coolant gauge sensor may be bad and giving the wrong readings.???Check fuses for coolant fans..Try that and let me know..

Thanks Guys,

I havn't checked the cooland tank for a while, and found that it's empty. So I added some Dex-Cool, and it seems working fine now.

By the way, I checked the owner's manual in that section, and it mentions a "Full Mark" on the tank, but I didn't see such mark. What did I miss?

Again, appreciate your input.

Have a great day!

I have a buick rendezvous 2002. About a week ago I noticed my car started kicking out cold heat and my temperature gage started to rise abnormally. Now it only kicks out cold ish air and my temperature gauge will jump between the first line to even the red line

The coolant level is fine. I have had a new water pump, thermostat, and blower motor resistor put on. I had the blower motor resistor put on to fix my heater controls, because it only worked on numbers 4 and 5. But never had any issues with cold air or over heating until a week ago.

I need help. I have no idea. It's almost like something is clogged or the water isn't getting to the engine.

at this point, it sounds like you have a head gasket that has failed and is putting air into the cooling system you can have a leak down test to confirm.

there are two sensors, one for the computer one for the fan. check your radiator with the engine shut off to see if it's the same temp all accross it. If you fel any cold or cool spots it needs to be replaced. make sure the fans don't kick on while doing this.

Temperature spiked to maximum hot after driving with heat on max for just over 1 mile. Turned heat down to cold and the temp went down a to just above half way mark to 3/4. The vehicle is a 2002 Buick Rendezvous CL. Do you think this is thermostat or something more serious like heater core?

That is odd because the heater on high would have helped cool the engine. Is the coolant level full?
