I have the car listed above it has the 3800 V-6 engine with 63,800 miles. The steering wheel has the radio functions on it and the cruise on/off switch is also on the steering wheel (bottom left).

When I push the button to turn on the cruise it will only blink. When I press the same button and the set button at the same time I can see next to the speedometer it lights up the cruise light. Once I release, the small LED on the on/off switch goes out and so does the one next to the speedometer. Not sure if there is a short in the steering wheel of if I need to look under the hood at the cruise control module. Either way I still do not know how to fix it.

Any help is appreciated.

It sounds like you have a problem with the brake light switch. Can I ask if the brake light work? Here is a cruise control wiring diagram which can help you check the connections, It could be the switch as well.

Please check out the diagrams (below). Please let us know what you find. We are interested to see what it is.

There are several things that will turn cruise off, brake switch, gear selection, parking brake switch, fuse, cruise switch, speed.

I would look at the above first, relays are for high amp draws, CC does not use one.

I have a 2001 Lesabre and it does the same thing. If you hold the on/off cruise button, the cruise works, as soon as you release it, the cruise goes off.

If you get the solution, please advise. I will do the same.

Purchased new switch from rockauto.com for $23.92 including shipping. Just pry old switch from steering wheel, unplug, reverse procedure and you are on your way. Did the trick.

It is an assembly and you would have to remove steering wheel and airbag.

I tell everyone, removing airbag is a dangerous business, if it accidentially deploys, it can cause severe injury.

Have the dealer or trusted garage do it.

Cruise control will not remain selected when button is pushed on steering left wheel spoke. Light will remain on as long as you hold the selector down. When you release the button the amber light will extinguish. During the time you hold the button down the system can be engaged but when ON/OFF select button is released the light extinguishes and cruise control disengages.

How do you remove the cruise control selector button to replace it, if that is the fix?

Thank you!

The driver side air bag need to be removed before you can replace the cruise control switch.
I advice you to let a qualify technician do that.

Thanks for any help you offer. My 2000 Buick LeSabre's cruise control won't engage. The LED next to the on/off switch lights up when I turn it on. The "CRUISE" light in the dash lights up when I set the speed. The only part that seems to not work is the speed actually being set. The car begins slowing down as soon as I take my foot off the gas. I checked the cruise fuse and it's fine. Why isn't the cruise engaging?

There are a couple of things that will disable cruise, first is brake switch, or parking brake switch.

Next would be the gear selector.

Also the car would need to be in closed loop, that is the engine must be at temp. If thermostat is bad, it will not heat up and cruise will not work.

Even thought you see no powertrain codes you may have a body, or chassis code. These can be read by trusted garage.

Cruise control button on steering wheel stays illuminated constantly (in off mode it has a dim illumination or sometimes flashes rapidly). The "CRUISE" indicator on the dash does not light (except for the startup process, and goes out with all other dash indications). I have power up to the module, and the ground at the module tests good. Now I have replaced the switch (to no avail) and I got a used CC Module at a used parts place, switched it out and it still did not work. The speedometer works just fine, so I'm thinking the VSS is alright. I'm out of ideas...what else?

Will the CC activate properly? The light on the wheel staying lit may be due to a short to or from the light and/or switch.

No the Cruise Control will not work at all, and the "cruise" indication on the dash will not illuminate. Interestingly, when I disconnect the harness from the module, the light on the steering wheel switch begins to work normally (Light completly out on off, and light on when pushed on).

I've been working with a diagram. To date all wires have continuity and power from switch to module. Transmission was just re-installed due to a rebuild. The speedo works correctly, thus leading me to believe the VSS is alright. I tried another module, and steering wheel switches and nothing seems to be working. The on/off switch glows all the time, except when it's in the off position it has a faint glow or flicker. The "CRUISE" indicator on the dash only lights on startup as it should be goes off and will not light at any other time. Since I bought a used module, Ive wondered if that had the same problem and was not a good unit. I've seen this same problem described in a number of different Google searches, but never a solution/repair.

Unlike previous Buicks I have owned, the cruise control on this one varies +/- 3 mph. Older Buicks maintain +/- one- half mph. What has changed and what can be done to fix it, other than driving a foreign model? I have been told that any GM car produced after 2000 have this undesirable trait.

that is how the factory makes it and there is no way of changing / programming it differently.. 3 MPH is not a big swing anyway so not sure why you would want to change it.

I had this to the shop and they said the cruise control was stuck and it was repaired 2 months later and it is doing it again so this time I have unhooked the cruise control but it still runs fast sometimes turning the motor off and resarting helps but lately that is not working. Could someone give me an idea of what needs to be checked. Thanks

there are no vacum leaks, bought a code red reader it shows the tps sensor is bad, but when tested it tests good . Could it be the wiring harness to the sensor?

What's the question? How to diagnose it? How to get it diagnosed? Do you have any other symptoms, test results, or clues to analyze? Does the horn work? Is the Air Bag warning light on?

The horn does work and no airbag light on, After I left the message I drove the car again and noticed that the rpm would hold on cruiser control but would slow down on hills and not recover the set speed.
My first question would be is this common.
Next question is how I diagnose or check to find problem.
Thanks

The most common cause of a dead cruise control is a broken clock spring, but that eventually affects the horn and air bag too. That's a wound-up ribbon cable in a plastic housing under the steering wheel.

From your description I would start by looking for leaks in the vacuum hose going to the servo, then check the other vacuum hoses for leaks. A vacuum leak typically causes an inability to maintain speed but there is some indication the system is trying to work. After that, for a totally dead system, you need a scanner to see if the switches are being recognized when they're pressed, and if the solenoids in the servo are being activated. You'd also have to check for a broken throttle cable from the servo.

Hi, My Buick cruise control box is making a whinning noise. Sometimes loud.I put my hand on it while engine is running to feel the vibration.I never use the cruise but turning it on or off does not affect the rough whinning. The box I am talking about is the square black box attached to the cruise control unit. I unplugged it, remove vac hoses etc but no change to the noise. Can I just disconnect it somehow and make it non functional? Thanks

That is the cruise control module (CCM) and yes you could remove it if you don't wish to use the cruise system. Just disconnect battery then remove the left sound insulator under the left side of instrument panel. Disconnect the CCM electrical connector. pry both locking tabs and pull down on the CCM to remove it. Or just disconnect the connector and leave the CCM in place, your choice..
