Follow the upper radiator hose to the engine. It will lead you to the thermostat housing. Remove the housing and the T-stat is there. NOTE: Before doing the work, disconnect the battery and drain the coolant.

Here is a picture of it

I own a well-maintained 2003 Buick Century. Recently, the low coolant light came on. Flluid levels revealed no proplems. I then had my oil changed and the light came on intermittantly, but no signs of overheating, fluid leaks, etc. Last night the engine temp light came on. Guage was nearly pegged, but not completely. I revved up the engine and the engine immediately returned to normal temp, but the heater blew cool air. Could this be a thermostat problem, and if so, where is it located. I can't find it on top of the radiator or at the base of the water pump.

I'd start with a stat. The low coolant light is more likely a bad sensor level problem.

I Bought an AC Delco thermostat for my car. The factory thermostat appears to have a built-in factory o-ring that’s actually part of the thermostat. If I am correct I should not need a paper gasket or any sealant when I install this thermostat correct? Thanks

Are you talking about the rubber o-ring around the thermostat itself (pictured) or are you talking about the seal for the housing itself?

Either way, if it has a rubber o-ring then you do not need another gasket.

I have locate where the thermostat goes, but I have noticed it is not in a very friendly place to get to, is there a trick or special way to get to this thermostat without knocking the hide off of your knuckles? Also, is there supposed to be a gasket with the new thermostat or is it the rubber gasket attached to it the only one?

Thanks in advance.

Hard indeed to get to without removing the throttle body (it needed a good cleaning, anyway, right?). The throttle body will need a new gasket and sealant for the coolant connection. The thermostat needs only the rubber edge seal, I think. Be sure to place it right side up.

I‘m having problems replacing the thermostat on my 2000 Buick Century.
I can’t remove the upper bolt on the Thermostat Housing; I don’t know if it’s frozen in place or, I just can’t reach it well enough to get a good grip on it (or both). There are two horizontal pipes in the way, one’s black and the other’s silver. I tried ‘liquid wrench’ on the bolt and gave it several good taps, but it won’t budge.
To access the bolt better, I tried to remove the Throttle Body. I removed the nut on the lower right side of the TB (in front of the small black plate that’s attached to the black pipe). However, I can’t seem to remove the stud bolt that comes from the Throttle Body and extends through the slot in the small black plate.
I’m wondering if I should try to remove the black and silver horizontal pipes that are blocking access to the upper bolt on the Thermostat Housing. If so, I’m not sure how; I can’t find any info on how to do it. By the way, the lower bolt on the TH also seems be frozen or, I can’t get enough leverage (or both). I would appreciate any advice that anyone can give me. THANKS!

Sorry for the late reply.

My info says to remove air pipe and exhaust cross-over pipe to get at thermostat housing. You would have to look at each end of pipe to see how to take loose.

Use a 6 point wrench or socket to remove bolt. You can use a cheater on rachet or wrench, just a long piece of pipe that will fit over tool, gives you more leverage. There are three things that can happen if you use a cheater, and two of them are bad.
1. the bolt comes loose.
2. You break the bolt, then you have to fish out the broken piece.
3. You strip out the threads, that's not hard to do, then you have to retap the hole and use different bolt.

I realize this is an old post, you probably no longer own this vehicle. In the future, hopefully, you don't have any vehicle issues, but, if you do, keep the site in mind. They are always working to make the site better and it's free.

Have a good day.

Replacing the housing is the easy part. Removing all the crap to get to the housing is the challenging part where help is needed.
