hi -

i have a 2003 audi a4 1.8 w/ CVT. I was pulled over because the white reverse/backup lights on the rear of my car were on while driving down the road. I've also noticed this happens after idling for a min or so in N. i'd be more than willing to provide a dontaion if there is a clear explainable answer.

thank you

The switch in the transmission that turns the backup lights on is shorted. Either that or the backup lights are shorted to the tail lights.
Lift the car enough to slide under. Pull the connector off the backup light switch on the side of the transmission. Lower the car and test drive it to check the backup lights.

Thank you for the quick reply. I will check that out in the next day or two and reply/$$. btw, I just had a complete new CVT transmission from audi (not a rebuilt) installed 5k miles/6mos ago. if the short is in the transmission, is it reasonable to expect this is to be covered under my 12k warranty (audi oem tranny/T-ECU) and 12mo service (tranny shop)? also, I live up in WA state USA and the rainy season has started, could wet roads/rain contribute?

again, thank you!

Maybe. Check your work order. They may have reused the old backup light switch.

Maybe. Moisture does conduct electricity. While checking the switch, look over the wires.

If you have a multimeter, you can check the switch electrically. Disconnect the connector. Set the meter to read resistance. Touch the connectors on the switch with the leads. No continuity in all gears except Reverse. Continuity in Reverse only.
