Car is turning over but not starting. When I switch on the ignition no dashboard lights come on

this car has been unused for a couple of months. Not surprisingly the battery is drained. I tried to start it by attaching jump leads. The ca will now turnover, but there is either no spark or no fuel getting through as there is absolutely no sign of the engine firing. One other point that may be related is that no dashboard lights at all come on, even though the car is turning over.
The last time the car was used there were no issues like this....any ideas? Guess it is not as simple as replacing the battery?

You must NEVER let the battery run down on a Volkswagen. Even disconnecting it to replace it leads to disaster. The engineers designed numerous computers to lock up. The car will need to be towed to the dealer to have the computers reprogrammed. Some models with automatic transmissions will not come out of park either. That means skidding it up onto a flatbed truck for the trip to the dealer. Sorry for the "got'cha", but that's one reason why so few Volkswagens are sold here. Only GM and BMW are possibly less customer-friendly companies.
