i broke down a few days ago and had someone help me figure out that my alternator is busted so i need to know what kind of alternator do i need for a 2002 vw passat GLS with a 1.8l turbo engine, also do i need a new battery if the alternator wasn't charging it that whole time???

Alternator should have part number on the back of it... also whether it's a 90amp or 120amp.

Charge the battery with a battery charger while you get the alternator replaced.
