At rear of cylinder is the ignition switch. Remove it from base and test if it is working correctly. Reinstall the ignition key cylinder and check at rear to see if it is turning correctly. The cylinder fails often.

Check out the diagrams (Below). Please let us know if you need anything else to get the problem fixed.

Cheers

I have been reading about an "immobilizer". Is that possibly what I am looking at inside the cylinder shaft and part of the problem?

No, immobilizer is a sensing unit at the steering and not the key itself nor any moving part of it.

Switch is attached by either one or two screws. Removing the screw would allow you to pull the switch out.

Well, here is the culprit. When I finally removed the switch, the broken piece pictured here fell out. Looked like it sheared off another piece. I do not know what this piece or shaft is called but it is what you find inside the lock cylinder and the opposite slotted end extends inside the switch. I had a feeling from the get go it was a broken linkage issue. Now, can I get a replacement part?

This part comes together with the lock assembly and you would not be able to get it by itself. You can get an ignition lock assembly from the junkyard and cannibalize this part. This would allow you to keep the present key, unless the cylinders are bad and you want to replace the keys.

I just found I have the same issue as you did, were you able to locate the shaft? Or were you stuck paying $300.00 for the whole assembly?

Just bought a used steering column for $75.00. Changed the lock cylinder mechanism. Now the car is trying to start, but just keeps turning over. Wondering if it is a security issue?

I have the exact same problem and the ignition tumbler rod broke. I removed the ignition cylinder and the ignition switch on the back of the housing, but do not know how to get the tumbler rod out.

My car stopped on me while driving along and after attempting to restart it the starter will not crank. Prior to it stopping I started experiencing problems with the ignition key lock cylinder and the shifter. I've replaced the ignition key lock cylinder, but the problem still exist. I troubleshooted the ignition switch for proper continuity, all is well. I had it tolled to the local Pep Boy's, they performed a charging system check and all is well, however, they also jumpered the starter an got it to crank. Pep Boy's told me that there's no signal from the ignition to the starter. Is there some fuse or relay I can check to find out if it has shorted out or what would you recommend I check to get to the bottom of the car's problem?

There are 3 main fuses you need to check. Starter-5amp, Main-40amp,Am2-30amp. Have to check to see if you are getting a control to your starter relay. If need a wiring diagram e-mail me at [email protected]

My toyota avalon xls 1998 won't start. When you put the key in the ignition it turns only 1/4 but no further and nothing starts. The battery is working so I am wondering what may be the problem and how much will it cost to fix. Thanks.

1998 Toyota Avalon Automatic

Hi, Problem is that the key does not turn in the ignition. It only turns to and from the lock position to the off position. The key works fine in the door locks. The security light does come on when I remove the key, and goes off when I insert the key. I tried spraying a little graphite into the ignition keyhole, but that does nothing. Because the security lite goes on and off, and that the key works on the door locks, I think the key is not the problem. Could it be the ignition/tumblers? Can I remove and replace this myself? Any others thoughts are greatly appreciated.

possibly the tumbler. also could be the part behind. Problem is that you have to be able to turn the key to pull the tumbler out. Either that or you can drill it to get it out. Once you get the tumbler out then take a screw driver and see if you can turn the part behind it. If you can easily then it just needs a tumbler. HTH

If the engine will not turn off when the ignition key switch is turned to off (for this model car), is this typically due to a damaged ignition switch and if yes, which part of the switch assembly needs to be replaced plus, what is the easiest and quickest way of repairing or replacing the worn out part? If not, what then?

You will notice there isn't alot of space to remove the two phyllips head machine screws attaching the switch to the key lock's housing. From your experience, what is the quickest way to remove the switch?

No quick way about it
What usually we do is drop down the steering a bit
as you may endup needing to remove the ignition lock
and that require more work
thin and long screw driver place it in on the small screw(ignition switch )and tap the screw driver with a hammer try to turn that should make it easier to loosen the screws

To remove ignition lock
If shear bolt studs are accessible, use a hacksaw to cut slots into exposed studs.
Remove studs using a screwdriver. If shear bolt studs are recessed or hard to reach with hacksaw, use a center punch on studs. Using a drill bit and screw extractor, remove studs. Place key in ACC position and remove ignition switch and lock cylinder.

I installed a new ignition switch but, occasionally while the ignition switch is in the start position and the starter is engaged, everything stops. The dash stays lit but, the engine stops turning. Normally this engine starts quickly. In a recent test, 1st try - start, 2nd try - starter engaged with engine turning then nothing after one or two revolutions (eventhough key still in start position), 3rd try - start, 4th try - start, 5th try - start. So, would you next look at the starter relay, starter contacts, solenoid switch or what?

I would use a test light and test if have power at the starter S terminal small wire as cranking
If have power and its failing to crank starter at fault (and I would suspect that)

There is an old saying "only a fool and a jeweler takes the back off a watch." It goes the same for a locks and tiumblers. It is a tricky situation that needs to be repaired by a locksmith or the dealer. the money will be well spent and shouldn't be over $75.00 good luck
