So have you checked for code's yet?If not you need to do that.Take it to a auto part's store and have them scan the car for code's.You have a vacuum leak caused by a bad intake gasket.Let me know if you have any code's if you do i need the exact code number's.

At Auto Zone then reader said "P0301, #1 cylender missing". When at a light or waiting to turn I can feel the engine missing but once I start to increase the gas nad release the clutch the missing seems to decrease. When at neutral, stpped, I step on the gas to increase the RPM's the "puffff, pufff, pufffff" seem to disappear.

It sound's just like a vacuum leak those 2000-2002 S model single cam engine's are known for leaking vacuum at the number 1 cylinder port where the intake gasket meet's the head.Take a look over by the power steering pump area that's where the number 1 cylinder is look at the gasket area see if it look's wrinkled up right there. Also you could get some carb spray while it's idling and spray around that port if the engine rpms go down or up or the engine die's you have a leak there.let me know what you find.

Sprayed carburetor cleaner, a second or two and the engine smoothed out for a few seconds. Gave it a longer spray and the engine almost died. Is it save to drive the car without damaging the engine? How can it be repaired without the cost of a repair shop? Are the bolts mounting the intake manifold tighten to a specific poundage?

If the intake gasket is leaking then you will have to replace the intake gasket it's about 4.5hrs labor plus part's they would charge you at a shop.If your handy with car's you could do it yourself it's not really that bad of a job but i have been working on saturn's for a long time.
