I have a 2002 Saturn SL1 with a 1.9L, 4 cyl, efi, ohc engine with almost 70k miles. Until recently, I have had absolutely no problems with the vehicle. The "service engine soon" light has started to stay on all the time. When I get to cruising speed at whatever the speed limit is, it feels like the car surges a little. It also feels like it's having trouble figuring out which gear to stay in. Sometimes it also wants to idle faster than it should. Does this sound like a costly transmission problem?

saturntech9, I had the car scanned and the code showing is P1409. They recommended changing the gas cap, which seemed to make no difference. What's my next move?
