2002 Oldsmobile Silhouette Temperature Gauge

Recently had water pump replaced because temp would spike to 3/4 and then drop suddenly to 1/4 heat level. Now that it has been replaced the check engine light came on and has three codes that could be possible problems. One is the coolant level is low the second is the thermostat needs replaced, it was replaced a year ago at most, and third issue is powertrain control module. Where do I start and what is you opinion?

What are the actual code numbers not code descriptions? Also if you have a p0128 you need a new thermostat I had a new thermostat only last two months and it was good brand one.So just because its less then a year old doesnt mean it isnt bad.

I'll try that first being the cheapest part and see where that takes me. Do you think changing the coolant temperature sensor would be the next thing to do? It doesn't over heat it just doesn't register a temperature on the gauge. As far as actual code numbers I'll have to find print out and get back to you. Thanks for the help.

Lets see where the temp gauge reads after you replace the thermostat.

You were right. The thermostat was stuck open and wasn't letting it build up heat. After removing the throttle body to access thermostat housing, because this is easier than undoing exhaust manifold, I am getting ready to bleed air out and should be good to go. Thanks for the information.
