About a week after buying car my service engine soon light came on. So I went to the local AutoZone and the ran a test on it and the code came back as a gas cap. So I bought a new gas cap and the light went off. A few days later the light came back on. So back to AutoZone I went and the same code for a gas cap came up. Obviously it's not that so what could it be? They said a possible emission problem? Could it be a vacuum leak? Car runs fine. No stuttering. No overheating. No exhaust problems.

What was the actual code number? p0440, something like that? It's the evap system. When testing it tries to pull a vacuum on the gas tank. If it can't pull a vacuum, it rationalizes that there is leak, somewhere, sets a code. As far as where the suspect leak is located, that is another story.

Yes, it was that code. Trying to do some research on it and some say it could be a purge valve? Or a bad fuel pressure sensor? But wouldn't that sensor send a code also?

It's possible, codes for that are in the 450--454 range. From here, I can't tell you what is causing it?

i been having stalling issues with my car listed above with a v6 3.4. my car will randomly stall out and will idle all out of wack if it sits at a light too long. the check engine light is on. had a random misfire code. i did a full tune up, oil change, fuel filter, plugs, wires, cleaned the throttle body, air filter. the fuel pressure had been tested in the car it is reading 46. the fuel pressure regulator has been replaced. also the IAC sensor, check all vacuum lines they are fine. i am at a total loss. please help.

you will need to check the fuel pressure when the car stalls.

The fuel pressure is low and I suspect that is the cause of the stall and the multi cylinder misfire. Low pressure will cause the injectors to not fire properly and under deliver the needed amount of fuel. This will cause the cylinders to misfire randomly causing the multi cylinder misfire.

I attached the process to replace the fuel pump as I would go ahead and do this and retest the system.

Please let me know if there are questions. Thanks

I got the check engine soon message. The error code is P0442, but I can't find what exactly it means. The answers range from fuel fill cap to lots of other things, like port schrader valve?

DTC P0442 : EVAP Control System - Small Leak Detected

There are many possible causes for this code..you will need to have a shop use a special pressure / purge diagnostic test to pressurize the entire EVAP system and find the small leak.

Take the car to autozone or an auto parts store which checks your computer codes for FREE. Don't buy anythinig until you have posted the codes here, so that we can assist you further. We don't want you to buy something that may not fix the problem.

My check engine light is on with the error code of:
P0410 Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction

It's been on for a almost a year. I would put fuel injector cleaner in the gas and the light would go away, now it stays on all of the time. I replaced the water pump in January. It's time for the registration and the light is on continually. I asked the auto store what would be related to the error code and they said it might be the smog pump. I replaced the smog pump and the EGR valve last week. I cleared the error codes and drove it for over 100 miles. The light has come on again.

Would you know anything else that might be failing? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Ok this code is related to the air pump but is an air flow problem. So what I need to know is if the P0410 is the only code or is P0412 and or P0418 also present? Get back to me and we will go from there.

That was the only one showing on the reader. The auto shop did not help me with it, so I don't know I needed to page down or something, as I was unfamiliar with the device

Ok then I need you to check the air pump relay in the under hood fuse relay box. It is relay number 10 and check fuse number 6 it is a 30 amp. I also need you to check the auto transmission fuse in this same underhood fuse box. It is a 10 amp and it is number 38. Let me know what you find here and we will go from there.

Very cool. Maxi Fuse #6 (30 amp) is blown. I will be replacing it. What the most reliable way to check a relay? Will I need to reset the error codes after I replace the fuse, or will it clear on its own? Thanks, I'll get back to you after the fuse replacement.

I replaced fuse #6 (30 amp maxi) and the relay. I cleared the codes and drove it around 70 miles. The check engine light came on and I took the car to the dealer. They replaced the same blown fuse and the mechanic said he ran the ump remotely with his service monitor and had no problem. Is there something that might be shorting the fuse, or would the new pump be bad? I have not had a chance to drive the car another 70 miles to see if the new fuse will hold. I should have that done tomorrow.

If it blows again then get back to me and I will look over the wiring diagram and see how it is routed and see what else might be causing this to happen.

ok thanks again. So far it is holding. I took it to the dealer yesterday and he reset the codes. I drove the car about 70 miles this morning and the fuse held. I took it back to the dealer and he smogged it and also mentioned that 2 monitors had not registered yet, the EVAP and the EGR. It was around 70 miles after I replaced the fuse the last time that it blew, so we'll see how it goes. I was able to smog it, so that's the main thing I needed done. Thanks again and I will get back to you if the check engine light comes on again.

My wife was driving her car and the service engine soon light came on as well as the traction control light and the abs light. She did not notice any difference in her brakes and when she came to a stop, she shut the engine off and turned it on again and the lights went out and stayed out. Any guess as to what that might be?

Sounds like the speed sensor is giving bad or no data. The computer may be interpreting that there is no movement or unequal movement happening.

440 is an evap leak so check fuel cap and erase code see if it comes back if it does it needs to be smoke tested to see where the leak is. fuel cap should have at least 3 clicks after getting fuel.

the brake light may be an abs problem so a mechanic will need to scan for codes for that may be a sensor or something more serious.try a security system reset for anti theft if it won't go out a mechanic will need to scan for that as well. see link
