2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee won't shift out of first gear

My Jeep was running great, then one day I stopped at a light and when i accelerated again, it would not shift, the rpms just kept rising. i pulled over, went in reverse, then tried again and wouldn't shift and check engine light came on. Still won't shift out of first gear. what the heck?

Same thing happened in my 2002 JGC 6 cyl 4 litre, I took tranny pan off and changed both sensors not a tough job, the sensors are held on by torque screws, problem solved with 180k miles, good luck Declan

If the light is on, have the computer scanned for trouble codes. It should identify where the problem is coming from.
