2002 Holden Commodore Alternator not working

My vx Commodores alternator is not working, car won't start without jumper leads, let it charge, turn it off and try starting it again and it doesn't work.
Can I put a vS alternator in or are they different?

You need the correct alternator, plugs in rear change, mount is altered and pulley dia I believe is different, make sure that the main pos cable has not arched out as this is a common problem on these, it will look black and over heated if it is faulty.
