Transmission swap?

My engine went out in my 2002 car listed above, so I bought a motor from eBay out of a 2002 Monte Carlo with the same VIN code as my grand prix, had it installed it runs really good. Now I think my transmission is going out, I researched transmissions and didn't see a Monte Carlo transmission on the list. So, should I buy a Grand Prix or a Monte Carlo transmission?

Hi,

Due to the control module which controls the transmission, I recommend getting a direct-fit transmission.

The transmission this vehicle came with is a 4T65E. There are two different codes (MN7 or N15) that will need to be identified on the transmission itself. Note that the Monte Carlo also has the 4T65E transmission, but the part numbers are different which usually indicates something is different.

I attached the OEM part numbers for both below. You can use that info to help find one.

So, you're saying since it's a Monte Carlo motor I should get a Monte Carlo transmission!

Hi,

The transmissions have different part numbers. However, both are electronically controlled. Since the original transmission has been working properly up to now, I would recommend getting the same thing and not one with a different part number such as the Monte Carlo.

The engine is basically the same. If there are differences with sensors or electronics, you could have changed them with the original ones. The transmission is a little different.

Okay, I have a 2000 Grand prix GTP as a parts car, will the transmission work in my 2000 Grand prix GT?

Hi,

I need to know the 8th digit of both vehicles' VIN numbers. That way I can look both up. I believe the GTP is the supercharged version. Is that correct?

Yes it's supercharged, thee 8th.digit for the GT is K and the GTP is 1 and my car is a 2002 not a 2000 or a 2001.

From what I'm seeing, it should work. Please keep in mind, there may be connector differences, but it appears to be the same model transmission.

Okay, thank you. Are you sure it will work, I'd hate to take the transmission out of the GTP and have it not work !

Since I'll be using a transmission out of a supercharged GTP can I take the supercharger off and put it on my Gt?

Hi,

Anything is possible, but it is going to take a lot more than just installing the part. Remember, the PCM is what controls the powertrain. The PCM isn't programmed or designed for a supercharger. Everything would need to be switched, including modules, vacuum harnesses, wiring harnesses, and so on.
