Loud engine

I have a 2002 GMC envoy. Once you start a vehilce that is cold its really loud and as it gets warmer the engine gets quieter something to do with the air intake I believe. Mine is staying loud it sounds like a Diesel truck now. After driving it for a while it goes back to normal but once I start it again its really loud especailly taking off until it starts to change gears as its an automatic. I had this same problem years ago and had it fixed I was wondering if this was just a sensor like a bad IAT sensor or something else that was letting in too much air that I could fix myself other then that all is fine. Any advise would be great.

you say loud like deisel but that i cant relate to air intake noise? more like exhaust noise like a cracked exhaust that closes crack when it heats up.

another possibility relating to air noise is your engine cooling fan. it's a declutching fan tha works off of heat. if it malfunctions and runs full tilt all the time it makes noise that might be more to what you are describing.

Yes I think its something like the air cooling fan. It is like something is stuck open like as I described when you start a cold car the engine is really loud and as it warms up it gets quiter. it seemed today after I started my truck and drove it for about 15 minutes whatever was "stuck open" wasn't anymore and all coming from the engine sounded fine but once I stopped my truck again and started driving only a short distance it was loud again. It did sound like maybe the clutch is being stuck open. Is there a way I can repair, trouble shoot or replace this myself.

open hood and watch/listen to fan under both conditions. if that's the issue you can change it yourself but it's not a completely amateur job.
