I've had a plug coil replaced in the past ($175-$190 or so) and now have another cylinder misfire code. This time for #5 - apparently the front right, as I'm facing the engine. I'd love to tackle this myself, given the price of parts vs. taking it to a shop.
The only think I can't seem to find good info on is the fuel rail that runs across the top of the plugs/coils.
I can tell that I'll have to move a bracket/brace on that side, to get down there, but what about the rail? Does that have to come off, too, in order to work on the c.o.p?

No luke the coil will come past the rail once you remove the hold down bolt the boots are rubber
they will move around the rail

I'm happy to report back that I bought the part locally for $40 plus another $1 for the di-electric grease and knocked it out last night. Truck now runs smooth as silk again. What a feeling to have it fixed - and know that I saved around $150 vs. getting it done at a repair shop, and who knows how much more vs. taking it to the dealer.

I did go ahead and take off the plastic air intake cover (3 bolts - the plastic piece that says "4.6l Triton" on it...). Also moved the bracket that holds the power steering fluid reservoir. Just made it easier to get my hands in there. Couldn't be more pleased with how it went, and I will not hesitate to take the rest of them on some time soon.

Didn't want to wait for an eBay order to ship, as this chugging/missing had been going on already for a couple of weeks. But, I am going to order a set ($80 (or less!) on eBay) and either have them on hand for the next time one goes out, or just dive in and do 'em all + the plugs sometime soon. My local Ford dlrshp parts dept. wanted $97!!! for one coil. (bought my single at O'Reilly's for $39.99)

I am replacing the coil over for cylinder 1 and all the spark plugs. I need to know which of the cylinders is cylinder 1 so I can get it replaced. Thanks so much!

i have a 2002 ford f-150, V8 5.4 liter engine, with about 118,000 miles on it. I've kept the vehicle in very good condition since the day I bought it new. But lately i've been experiencing a violent jerking of the truck when i stay in the range of about 40-50 mph, at about 2500-3500 rpm. i've had it in the shop with the suspicion it might be a transmission problem, had the torque converter replaced, changed the spark plugs, etc. But nothing has solved it. If you could help me out, it'd be greatly appreciated.

Usually this is a MAF sensor at the air filter box...can also be 02 sensors, but not as likley. Buy some MAF sensor cleaner clean it and test drive. May need to replace it as cleaning does not always solve the problem!

I changed the spark plugs on my truck and everything is running right but my service engine light is on. Is this normal when you replace things like spark plugs and is there a way to reset it?

you can reset it by rumoving the batteyr cables for a few minutes. however if there is a problme it will delte it.

i suggest having a autopart store check and clear the codes for you.

Ii REPLACED COIL PACK AND SPARK PLUG 6 months ago on Cylander 3. changed the rest to do a tune up and not the #3. Seemed to be fine on test drive then heard a loud bang or pop and the #3 coil pack blew off . the threads on the spark plug seem to be fine no damage. coil pack damaged. what could have caused this and can i put a new spark plug and coil pack back on without further damage

I'll assume you have the 5.4L V8 because there have been notices of this happening. Everything that I have read pertaining to this deals with the threads tearing out of the head because of the shallow thread deapth. Before you try to replace the plug, check to see if you can tell if there was damage to the threads in the head where the plug goes. Let me know so I can further advise.

I need to change the spark plugs on my truck but can not find them. WHere are they located at? V8 4.L

last week filled up and thought I got a tank of bad gas.tried dry gas and fuel injector cleaner as a fix.refiled next week with tank of premium.still sounds like it has spark plug knock.today changed the plugs and plug wires and as you give it gas it still has a chattered knock like bad gas or bad plugs or wires.havent had the money for diagnostic at local ford dealer.what else could it be?pcv-o2 censors-fuel filter? HELP its kiling my gas millage.this truck has been one of the best trucks Ive ever owned and Im going to drive it til the wheels fall off its spotless in mint condition-just lots of highway millage.

2001 Ford F150 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic

My 2001 F150 has 80K. Starts and runs ok. Fuel economy is 15-16 mpg city . . 18-19 mpg highway.
Last fall mpg started dropping 12mpg city and 15 mpg highway. I've heard from ford mechanics and serviceman that the plugs are good for 100k
Here the truck is at 80k. Would I get better fuel economy and performance if I go ahead and change the plugs? Thanks. George

plugs arnt gonna increase your mileage that much. unless your noticing driveability issues.

whens the last time you had a tune up? i.e new air filter, fuel filter.

my truck seems to run rough when i accelerate slowly it sounds like its misfiring. The truck sounds fine when it idles and accelerates quickly. it also seems to sound fine when maintaining a speed. i changes the spark plugs and that didnt help. i think the problem could be the fuel injectors but i really dont know.

Check and test the throttle position and mass aiflow sensors also check injectors and oxygen sensors, EGR valve opening too soon-try running an injection cleaner thru and see what happens

Hey guys, I got a F150 with 5.4, V8. I am ready to change the plugs and noticed coils have to be removed to get to the plugs. Looks like fuel rails are in the way of some plugs. Any suggestions on removing rails or can I get around them?

shouldnt have any problem with them there, you can use universal joints and extensions to get at a good angle.

Engine Performance problem V8 Four Wheel Drive Automatic 175000 miles

i recently changed the plugs in my 2000 f150 w/ 5.4 triton. it had developed a miss. when i pulled the plugs, all wells had some amount of oil in them. #2 were pretty full. ran great for about 2 weeks and miss is back? don't know if oil is already back in holes yet. i know i need to change the boots as they were swelled from the oil. my question is how is the oil getting in the wells? engine seems pretty dry on the outside. thanks larry

On this truck when this happens it means the spark plug is bad leaking a small amount for compression and oil which accumulates in the plug wheel. Change the spark plugs and it will go away. Here is a video to show you how.
