ashtray will not open

Is there any give when you push it in? or is it stuck solid.

it gives a little and is recessed about a quarter inch.

I know what your talking about had the same problem. What has happened is the spring for the ash tray/cupholder has broken off the plastic tray. What need to do is use a small screwdriver and undo the clips at the top edge of the tray to remove the cup holder completely. Cross your fingers once you get the cup holder/ash tray out you might be lucky and find the spring laying on the lip of you dash as I did; now you can see where the spring goes w/ some small screws replace the spring and it should work fine.
