It's always easiest to use a serpentine belt tool, but it isn't absolutely necessary.

You'll need a long (18-24 in.) breaker bar. It may need a 3/8 or 1/2 in. drive. (You'll have to check your tensioner pulley)

Just insert the drive end into the socket on the tensioner pulley and pry up. This'll loosen the entire belt so that you can remove it.

Then install the new one and release the tensioner pulley. It will already be set at the proper tension. (So long as it was set right to begin with)

***NOTE***
Remember or draw out a diagram so that you'll know which war the belt wraps around the pulleys on your engine.

Replaced the tensioned fine but old belt is on absolute last legs. Have new belt, but can't get belt out, motor mount is in the way, as in inside the belt. Can't see how to remove without hoisting engine. How do I switch the belts? Routing and tension not the question here. Thanks for the help!

Yes a good jack will work, but becareful of the oil pan, they are some what fragile aluminuim. Try putting a piece of wood between the jack and the pan.

my husband changed the serpentin belt, loosing the pully tensioner and replaced the belt and now the belt smokes when it is running. The belt did go when it was being driven and there is also antifreeze dripping out quickly while the car is running it looks like it is coming from near the belt wheels and is leaking on the belt.

1997 Chevy Malibu 6 cyl Two Wheel Drive Automatic 190k miles

I was driving my Malibu and when I got home the engine was steaming. The tempature gage was normal and it sounded like an air leak/release of pressure. coming from near the air filter not radiator, I also am having trouble changing the drive belt i cant seem to find a tention release so i can put the belt on and then tighten it, thank you for your time.

There are a few hoses back there that could be leaking, use a bright flashlight to see if you can pinpoint the source. As far as the belt goes, there is an automatic tensioner arm on the front of the engine. If you push on the belt in between two accessories, you will see the arm move, that is the tensioner. It shoiuld have either a15mm bolt or a 3/8 drive square hole to use for aw rench/ratchet to remove tension. top pic is for a 3.1 L the bottom is for a 3.4L engine

I had my serpentine belt replaced in a garage about a month ago because it was squealing and slipping off. Last week it slipped off again. I took the tension-er off and it was busted bad. I replaced it with a new one from Advanced auto part number 89241. Now the belt is not lining up and it keeps slipping off the crank shaft and half way off the idle pulley above it. What could be the problem?

Check correct tension and belt. Check that the pulleys all line up. Sometimes I use a long straight edge across pulley face, see if the other pulleys line up? Check that no pulley is trying to seize. That is all I can think of, at the moment?

I would recheck the mounting of the tensioner it sounds like the alignment pin is not in the hole.

Please let us know happens so it will help others.

I took the tension-er back and got a new one just in case it was defective. It is 100% on right. Now the car either does not start or the belt just comes right off. Should the crankshaft and AC compressor line up perfect when a straightedge is applied to the outside? The crankshaft is about .05-1" further out than the ac compressor. From what read it could be the harmonic balancer. Any thoughts or suggestions would be grealty appreciated.
Thank you

Take the belt off, try to move all pulleys, in and out, up and down, even on the crankshaft, any movement? With belt on, can you easily turn any pulley by hand, if so, I do not think that is enough tension, whatever the reason. A different tension-er seemed to change things, correct? I don't where you got the tension-er? Can you try one from dealership? I do not like that one inch, can you easily move the ac pulley or crank shaft? with out being able to look at it, I am bouncing up against, I do not know.

It is the harmonic balancer:( and seal. What is the best way to get to the harmonic balancer in a 2001 Chevrolet Malibu? Looked it up found no results. A garage I called said they would have to remove the engine but if I can get to it by taking the wheel off I can do it myself. I guess the question is can I get to it by the wheel off? Simple instructions would be a greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Removal Procedure

Notice: Routine inspection of the belt may reveal cracks in the belt ribs. These cracks will not impair the belt performance. The belt should be replaced if the belt slip occurs if a section of the belt ribs are missing. A single serpentine drive belt is used to drive all engine accessories. All belt driven accessories are rigidly mounted with the belt tension maintained by a spring loaded tensioner. The indicator on the movable portion of the tensioner must be within the limits of the marks of the stationary portion of the tensioner. Any reading outside of these limits indicates either a defective belt or tensioner.

1. Remove the coolant recovery reservoir. Refer to Surge Tank Replacement in Cooling System.
2. Rotate the drive belt tensioner in a clockwise motion using a box end wrench.

3. Remove the drive belt.

Installation Procedure

1. Rotate the drive belt tensioner in a clockwise motion using a box end wrench.
2. Install the drive belt. Connect the serpentine drive belt last to the power steering pulley.
3. Install the coolant recovery reservoir.

First you have to remove the top engine mount, please support the bottom of the engine while doing this. then rotate the drive belt tensioner in a clockwise motion using a box end wrench, then you can remove the belt. let me know how you make out.

All you'll need is a half-inch drive breaker bar (Or a long handled half-inch drive ratchet)

Insert the drive into the square plug on the idler pulley on the side of your motor and either push or pull, depending on which way your pulley is set.

This will release the tension on your belt and allow you to slip it off. Then install the new one and release the idler arm to replace the tension back on the belt.

***NOTE***
You have to remember which way your belt went on.

If I've helped you, please take the time to vote for me as my reputation pays my bills. Thanx, Ernest.
