Need to be heavy on the gas peddle to get the car to go

Just the other day my cars check engine light came on. It a 2002 Chevy impala ls with 120000 miles. Now, I have to push the gas peddle harder to get the car to go. The rpm's are not reving up so I know that it's not the tranission slipping.
