2002 Chevy Avalanche - yesterday while driving the red battery indicator started flashing; today while driving ALL gauges dropped to zero, 5 minutes prior - the truck started just fine. Now when I try to start it - it ticks with no drained battery sound. The battery and cables have been replaced within the year. Is it maybe my starter or alternator? And if so, how do I know which one?

You will have to your battery charged and tested then start the engine up let it idle and take a multimeter and see what the voltage reading at the battery is at idle. That is your starting point also make sure the battery cable's are clean and tight.
