Daughter (in Arizona) has 2002 Acura RSX with 50,000 miles. Hears 'grinding noise''. Independent mechanic says (and 'shows' her) that two rear engine mounts are gone plus one transmission mount. Seems a lot for a car with only 50,000 miles.

I can appriciate your caution, the possibility that 50k has taken out all the motor/transmission mounts seems odd, but I can tell you from my experience that it can happen just that way. Document the work with pictures, be sure that you get a fair shake on whatever deal the repairing facility is offering, who knows, maybe this is an honest mechanic!!
