2001 Volvo V40 timing

I tried to do my timing belt and now I have everything messed up. I did research on line had some instructions with timing belt kit and copied a set from a Chilton's book at the library. somewhere I thought I could get old belt off by taking the three bolts out of the front cam gear and even though it worked the other cam moved a little and still couldn't get new belt on cause I needed to get the crank pulley off for install of new one. I moved cam gears back to marks and put new belt on but when I tried to spin crank it came to a stop and I knew it wasn't right. I reversed the crank and heard a ratchet like sound. trying to figure out where it was coming from I went forward again and crank seemed to travel further but still was off. I thought I may try pulling belt spin crank one turn and line marks again and wrong again. Now all marks are out of sync. How to get back to the beginning to try and complete my timing.

So did old belt break? if no was engine rotated to TDC and tensioner loosened to remove belt? if no Bad news engine is an interference type which means if belt broke pistons contact valves or if engine is rotated without belt or belt out of time piston hits valves bending theem. This will require head to be removed and taken to a machine shop.

As I said I took front cam off to remove old belt. Then still couldn't get belt all the way off with pulley on crank. Now all marks are out of sync not sure when I line up crank if its on compression stroke or exhaust. cam gear has slots so putting gear back on still has implications of messing up actual marks lining up with cover . Now all marks are off exhaust , intake and crank

Please reread my post paying attention to interference engine. The way you went about removal was wrong and I have no doubt damage to valves has happened.
