I need the clutch and flywheel replaced and have received quotes from $1200 to $2400. What is realistic? Is one quote too good to be true?

REGARDLESS WHETHER IT'S FREE OR TEN GRAND

I'D USE A REPUTABLE SHOP - THE STEALERSHIP IS NOT NECESSARILY THE ANSWER - THE MOST POPULAR OR MOST ADVERTISED MAY NOT BE THE RIGHT CHOICE - OTHER SHOPS CAN BE MORE THAN CAPABLE !

YOU ARE ALLOWED TO GET OTHER QUOTES - ASK AROUND AT MAYBE AN AUTOMOTIVE MACHINE SHOP WHOM MIGHT DO YOU THE BEST JOB - MANY TIMES THEY WILL BE THE ONE(S) TO SURFACE YOUR FLYWHEEL, THEY KNOW "WHO IS WHO"

I'D GET IT IN WRITING

EXACTLY WHAT IS GOING TO BE DONE (LIKE SURFACE/ REPLACE THE FLYWHEEL - SOME THINGS JUST CANNOT BE SEEN WALKING AROUND IT)

UNSEEN THINGS - POSSIBLE ADDITIONAL COSTS NOT IN THE QUOTE

WARRANTY?

HOW LONG?

RETURN TO THIS THREAD, LET US KNOW HOW IT GOES

on your vehicle, you need a complete clutch assembly with a flywheel. thats the expensive part. check to be sure all parts are new, labor included and a written warranty.

I always reccomend throwing away top and lowest and look at the rest.

The dual mass flywheel alone is close to $1000, clutch disc & pressure plate, 6.5hr labor, plus additional parts / labor (that is "unknown" until the transmission has been removed from the vehicle) adds up quickly.

Estimates are just that... if anyone can provide an exact quote before the transmission is pulled, they are psychic and are in the wrong business.

An estimate is a "ball park figure"... the final repair can be above or below that, depending on which side of the coin the shop is estimating on.

Estimating to get the customer to agree to the work (low estimate), or estimating to cover potential issues (shop owner covering himself for the "unknown", final bill will probably be cheaper).

Would you rather have a shop call you and say, "sorry, it will be $800 more" or "good news, we didn't need the extra stuff, so it's cheaper"?

Dual Mass Flywheels should not be resurfaced / reused.
