how does a mechanic run an all wheel drive vehicle in 2 wheel drive when troubleshooting it

Is your vehicle full time AWD? If it is, you need to disconnect or remove the rear drive shaft to run it in 2wd. NOTE: Make sure the trans fluid doesn't leak out when testing from where the drive shaft attaches.

There is a fuse holder mounted on the rhf strut tower/ or in the fusebox, fit a 10 amp fuse and you will see a light on the dash (green), say 2WD. This only works in Automatic transmission equipped vehicles.
If the mechanic is correctly equipped..he can manipulate the transmission settings using the 'Select-Monitor', (Subaru's factory diagnostic system)
